Bruce Springsteen

Bruce Springsteen has, over the course of his 35 years as a recording artist, established himself as one of rock’s premier songwriters. He and his legendary E Street Band have also developed a storied reputation as some of the greatest performers of all time.

Rocketing out of the wastelands of New Jersey, Springsteen’s first big break occurred with the release of his third album, 1975’s classic Born to Run. More fully realized than anything he had done to that point, Born to Run made good on the promise of hype that had been following him for years. With its masterful, Spector-ish wall of sound production and songs full of cars, dreams and night time adventures in the street, the album made Springsteen a star and landed him on the cover of both Time and Newsweek in the same week.

Beginning with 1978’s Darkness on the Edge of Town, Springsteen’s albums have seen him approach more political subjects, as well as an increased focus on examining the hardships of love and life and faith. Born in the U.S.A. (1984) made him one of the biggest stars in the world.

Recent years have found Springsteen alternating between mostly acoustic, singer-songwriter albums and full-blown rock work. His latest album and tour, We Shall Overcome, found Springsteen and a new band playing traditional folk tunes and re-arranged versions of his own material to raucous reception.

Springsteen’s connection to David Sanborn dates back to 1975, when Sanborn was called in to add his distinctive baritone, alongside the Brecker Brothers, to the song “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” from Born to Run.
